"Hare in the Hedgerow at Dawn " watercolour
The hare’s corner (Cuinne an ghiorria) was a tradition in Irish farming of leaving a corner of a field uncultivated.. The resulting haven allowed wildlife to shelter and thrive particularly the hare - It was also in recognition of the interdependence of human life and nature. Wild flowers sprang up in these spaces, bees, insects,birds and mammals availed of the food source and very soon an important ecosystem came to life. Obvious benefits spilled over in improved harvests of fruit vegetables and crops.due to the presence of pollinators
This painting in watercolour is of a silhouette of a running hare on the corner headland of a ploughed field glimpsed through wild flowers. In the background is a magnificent dawn .
