Just this morning, before I got out of bed, I was, for no reason, thinking of a hare that lived here for several years, and how much I enjoyed watching it at sundown, as it searched for food. I always wondered how it survived the winter, and it seemed to be a lone hare. And one day, earlier this year, it was gone. I like the idea that it's merely dreaming someplace, like the hare in your wonderful painting.

Trudi Doyle replied:

Thank you Daniel - that is an interesting coincidence ! - Hares are mainly solitary creatures but do band together during mating season in Spring and sometimes in late winter - they sleep in the open and so are vulnerable to predators and hunters relying on their acute senses and amazing speed to survive. - I hope your hare just moved away to greener pastures - he may return some day - or perhaps he is in hare heaven ! Such intersesting creatures !

Artist's Description

"Dreaming Hare at Haroldstown Dolmen " Acrylic on canvas.
Hares are largely silent creatures preferring to feed by moonlight or in summer as the last light fades from the day. They are sighted only rarely and have a shadowy existence which adds to their mysteriousness. In hare mythology the hare is a creature with pagan, sacred, shamanic and mystic associations.
In Ireland Dolmens are our most clearly recognisable megalithic monuments. They were originally covered with earth, in most instances the original earth covering has weathered away leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact as in the case of this Haroldstown Dolmen which is near where I live in County Carlow Ireland.
Dolmens or portal tomb date from the Neolithic period or New Stone Age, -2,500 to 4000 BC, A chararteristic feature is a massive roof stone or slab, usually weighing many tons and inclined at an angle with the highest part over the entrance or'portal' though this is often closed...
