"Wildflower meadow and Stone wall Inisheer" watercolour.
The miles and miles of stone walls define the farmers fields on Inisheer (Inis Oirr) and the Aran Islands in general and are a most impressive sight.
Galway, the Aran islands and much of Ireland is very stony and in order to be farmed needed to be cleared of stones.
Since there is no simple method of getting rid of stones the obvious thing to do was to build walls with them.The typical stone walls are dry stone walls -there is no mortar between them, they are built by carefully selecting stones that will sit together.The size of the fields is proportionate to the stoniness (or poverty) of the land, if there are more stones to be cleared, more walls are built and the fields are smaller.
These fields are used for rearing livestock and for planting crops. In Summer the walls come alive with fuchsia, montbretia and many wild grasses, the fields are peppered with wildflowers which not only nourishes the stock but also...
