Description
"The Earth Awaits" a surreal Acrylic on canvas piece .Winter for us in the northern Hemisphere- - days shorten, light is scarce, plants become dormant, birds fly south, animals hibernate and nature's long wait for Spring begins.
When this happens I sometimes wish to retreat from the world and become dormant like the earth and the flora and fauna of the natural world.
This painting " The Earth Awaits" sybolises this mood of retreat and waiting - The moon continues to shine and life goes on but the earth waits in sleep.. .
Winter by William Shakespeare describes the feeling very well !
When icicles hang by the wall
And Dick the shepherd blows his nail
And Tom bears logs into the hall,
And milk comes frozen home in pail,
When blood is nipped, and ways be foul,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
Tu-who! Tu-whit! Tu-who! - a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.
When all aloud the wind do blow,
And coughing drowns the parson's saw,
And birds sit brooding in the snow,
And Marian's nose looks red and raw
When roasted crabs hiss in the bowl,
Then nightly sings the staring owl,
Tu-who! Tu-whit! Tu-who! - a merry note,
While greasy Joan doth keel the pot.

This so resonates with me, having spent 57 years in Southern California, 6 in Nashville (my first snow!) and next year, moving to Michigan, next to a lake. I was there for Thanksgiving, and there were deer and wild turkeys in the snow, and I thought of your work one night, looking up at a very misty moon through bare branches. You and Shakespeare are making me feel better about this move! Thank-you.
