Description
The hawthorn is stark and elegant in winter
HAWTHORN -" crann bethadh" known as the the celtic tree of life. Because trees have their roots in the unseen world of spirit, they are doorways into that world.
Old ballads sing of those who have entered the Otherworld by the door of a sacred tree. The hawthorn is said to be sacred to the faeries .
'Beware, beware the hawthorn,
Lest it strike you down,
For if you take an axe to it
You'll rue that you were born.'
It was a superstition that if one interfered with such a tree -a fairy tree - then bad luck would follow because this was the home of the 'little people'.
In Ireland if the three fairy trees; - Hawthorn, Oak and Ash grow together it is particularly auspicious and this is venerated even more than the single tree.

What very beautiful colors and I love the way the threes are rendered - as if etched into the snow. v

Stunning lines. We planted a hawthorn in our old house in Calgary. I hope it is fairing well in the flood! Love the colours. Thank you for sharing the story. v
