Artist's Description

"Winter Fledgling" symbolising the spirit of renewal which we experience each year in the Northern Hemisphere when Winter Solstice or midwinter arrives on the 21st December.
On that day with the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year many ancient cultures celebrated surviving the year gone by and the promise of renewal and hope for the future.
Across continents humans attempted to light up the long dark nights and took time out from months of back-breaking agricultural toil.
The Norse "Yule"celebrated the end of short days and long nights by burning a large bonfire and much eating and drinking. Celebrations around this time predate the Christian celebration of Christmas.
Now winter solstice celebrations are intermixed with religious celebrations, such as Christmas, Hanukah and Kwanzaa.
