Hares are traditionally mythical archetypal symbols of femininity, associated with the lunar cycle, fertility, longevity, and rebirth.
But if we dig a little deeper into the stories they are also contradictory, paradoxical creatures - symbols of both cleverness and foolishness, of femininity and androgyny, of cowardice and courage, of rampant sexuality and virginal purity.
People often ask me who the women I paint are and if they are based on real people- Who models for my work ?
When I paint I do not have a model or a specific person in mind - the women I paint are part of a composition and are archetypal figures. In this piece "The Hare Keeper" the central figure fits with 'The Caregiver' archetype - full of empathy and compassion. The surroundings are spring like - blossoms , returning swallows and cavorting March hares - in the ground is a sleeping green figure - about to wake and clothe the landscape with new growth.
