Title
The Butter Slip Medieval Street Kilkenny I
Artist
Trudi Doyle
Medium
Painting - Watercolour
Description
Watercolour of a picturesque ancient medieval side street in Kilkenny Ireland known as "The ButtterSlip "
The Butter Slip was so called because both it and the Market Slip (another narrow medieval street) were shortcuts to a boat slip at the river Nore where merchant boats docked.
The streets in those medieval days was not clean because of the practice of throwing slop from buckets out windows and doors , so it probably was slippy -some wore shoes with high heels and soles to raise them above the pavement and so avoid stepping into it.
