Description
"The Butterslip" is the name of this historic side street with stone archway in Kilkenny Ireland dating from medieval times.
Situated on the banks of the River Nore, Kilkenny is both medieval and modern. The 'Butter Slip'is so called because both it and the Market Slip (another narrow medieval street) were shortcuts to a boat slip at the river Nore where boats docked.
The streets in medieval days were not clean because of the practice of throwing slop from buckets out windows and doors , so it probably was slippy -some wore shoes with high heels and soles to raise them above the pavement and so avoid stepping into it.
