Artist's Description

I love the fragrance of winter flowering bulbs -hyacinths and paperwhite daffodis grown indoors when it's cold and bare in the garden. Hyacinths give an intense hit of fabulously clear blue in late December or early January accompanied by fragrance that fills the house, each flower a packed thick spike of scores of waxy florets -beautiful.
Hyacinths always bring the poem "The Waste Land" by T.S. Eliot to mind - particlarly these enigmatic lines.
“You gave me hyacinths first a year ago;
They called me the hyacinth girl.'
—Yet when we came back, late, from the Hyacinth garden,
Your arms full, and your hair wet, I could not
Speak, and my eyes failed, I was neither
Living nor dead, and I knew nothing,
Looking into the heart of light, the silence.
