Description
Watercolour of a Red Squirrel
The beautiful Red Squirrels are not such a common sight in Ireland any more due to the influx of the Grey Squirrel In 1911 a pair of grey squirrels is believed to have been given as a gift to a resident of Longford Castle from where they quickly escaped. When the greys arrive into an area of woodland the resident red squirrels usually disappear within 5 to 15 years.
Competition from the more robust grey squirrel for food and shelter and infection by the deadly squirrel pox virus – which greys transmit to reds - has been the main factor in the red squirrel’s decline.
However -the good news is that the Red squirrel is slowly recovering after years of decline due to the fact that the Pine Marten has made a recovery since becoming a protected species by the Wildlife Act of 1976. It has taken a long time for this slow breeding animal to repopulate previous territory. The return of this native predator has impacted the alien grey squirrel population and indirectly helped the native red to recover.

Beautiful! It reminds me of Squirrel Nutkin. Interesting description - I hope that they don't disappear! L/F

Thank you Catlyn - The Red Squirrel is making a comeback thanks to the Pine Martin who preys on the Greys !
