Title
Persephone and Pomegranates
Artist
Trudi Doyle
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
This framed acrylic on canvas painting is inspired by the myth of Persephone which features the pomegranate.
I first saw pomegrnates growing on a tree in Tuscany and sketched and painted them there.
In the Greek myth Persephone was kidnapped by Hades and taken to the Underworld. Her mother, Demeter went into mourning and all green things ceased to grow. Zeus could not leave the Earth to die so he commanded Hades to return Persephone to her mother.. Anyone who consumed food or drink in the Underworld was doomed to spend eternity there. Persephone ate no food, but Hades tricked her into eating 4 pomegranate seeds so she had to spend 4 months in the Underworld every year -. For those four months Demeter does not allow anything to grow... and we have Winter.
