Description
Watercolour painting of the orange Montbretia flower, also known as Crocosmia which grows profusely in the west of Ireland. I painted this en plein air on the beautiful Aran Island; Inisheer. In the background are the ubiquitous stone walls and the ruins of O'Briens castle.
Inisheer or Inis Oir, island of the east, is the smallest and most easterly of the Aran Islands, the nearest island to the mainland, it is set in glistening crystal clear blue atlantic waters has rare plants and flowers and a wealth of breathtaking scenery. The island has a rich natural and cultural heritage including natural landscape archaeology, Christian heritage, history and folklore. Inisheer has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years; arrowheads and flint from the Stone Age have been recovered at various locations on the island. Later evidence, from the Bronze Age, comes from urns and bones excavated at Cnoc Raithn.
Inisheer's history is strongly linked to the sea; the sea provided food for islanders to live on, and protected them from famine. On this island you can see a traditional way of life practised by an Irish speaking community of around 250 people.
