Description
Painting "In Her Own Words" Acrylic on canvas.
Letters are now known disparagingly as "Snail Mail"
Think twice before you denigrated the humble missive ! Long, long ago (when I was young ! ) before the age of email, tweets and texts letters often effected lives and were pivotal to the unfolding of a courtship or a love affair.
Even though it is mostly bills and fliers I still look forward to the post each day. The sight of the now rare letter popping through the letterbox gives me a wee frisson of excitement- preferable to that sinking feeling when the all too common window envelopes arrive.
Sending a letter is the next best thing to showing up at someone’s door - presuming that someone longs to see you of course ! Letters create a connection which email, tweets and texts will never match. When writing a personal letter some of your DNA travels with the missive and deposits itself in another’s postbox and eventually sits on their table -perhaps in a far distant land.
When it comes to sharing one’s deepest thoughts, sincere sympathies, ardent love or gratitude, letters are best. However, my lovely mother, a constant letter writer, often quoted the phrase " never put it in writing" -presumably she meant that sometimes "the less said ( or written) soonest mended" in the case of a disagreement.
Maybe she was misquoting PG Woodhouse. !
"Never put anything on paper, my boy, and never trust a man with a small black moustache"

So much of what we know about people from the past, comes from letters. I know you're a fan of Dora Carrington, and her letters, especially those to Lytton Strachey, are wonderful. Here's to letters and your thought provoking work.
Trudi Doyle replied:
So true - letters are indeed an invaluable source of information . Thank you Daniel
