This Megalithic Dolmen is near where I live in County Carlow Ireland As a child my parents told me that it was a giants table and the capstone had been thrown by the giant from a nearby hill ! In fact a dolmen is a type of single-chamber tomb, usually consisting of two or more megaliths supporting a large flat horizontal capstone ("table").
Dolmens mostly date from the early Neolithic period 6000 & 4000 years ago. They were originally covered with earth or smaller stones to form an ancient burial mound or tumulus. A chararteristic feature is a massive roof stone or slab, usually weighing many tons and inclined at an angle with the highest part over the entrance or'portal' though this is often closed by a blocking stone
In many instances the earth covering has weathered away, leaving only the stone "skeleton" of the burial mound intact as in the case of this.Haroldstown Dolmen.
