Watercolour of a woman reading the celtic legends of the goddess Eostra who was reputed to turn into a hare on nights of a full moon.
The Saxon goddess Eostra or Ostara's name is thought to mean "dawn", Eostre's attendant animal was the Hare . Festivals of the Goddess Eostra and the Spring Equinox are celebrated on March 21.
The Hare is embedded in ancestral folk myths throughout the world, from the Americas to the Far East, from Africa to Europe. The Hare was at one time considered both male and female. This union of masculine and feminine makes the Hare an excellent symbol for marriage. Indeed, the ancient Greeks made wedding rings with hare designs on them, and their wedding bowl which was used to sup their wedding wine was often glass etched with hares.
Aphrodite was also always accompanied by a hare.
