Description
'Will-o'-the-wisp' is an atmospheric ghost light often seen at twilight before sunset or at night, especially over bogs, swamps or marshes in the Autumn / Fall.
It is also known as 'Bog light' . It resembles a flickering lamp and is said to recede if approached.
In Irish folklore, these lights are held to be either spirits of the dead, or other supernatural beings or spirits such as fairies or puca (a small mischievous goblin-like fairy ) attempting to lead travellers astray. The Will-o'-the Wisp is still almost as mysterious today as it was two or three centuries ago. However, the mystique and the legends that surround it that were spread orally from generation to generation are slowly being forgotten as the age of the lonely foot traveler gradually recedes into the distant past.
