Painting completed en plein air during a painting holiday I organised on beautful Inisheer in the summer of 2013.
Inisheer or-Inis Oirr, the smallest of the Aran islands off the wild west coast of County Galway in Ireland is close to the strange limestone landscape of the Burren and the famous Cliffs of Moher which are clearly visible in all their splendor from the island..
In the background of this watercolour is the historic O'Briens castle
The remains of this picturesque castle built by the O,Brien family who were rulers until the 1500,s stands at the highest point of the island.
The Currach was the best-known of all the Irish boats. It was made of a wicker-work frame, covered with hides (animal skins) which were stitched together with thongs.
They are still used round the coast but tarred canvas is used instead of skins. They were propelled by oars or sails according to circumstances. The currach has traditionally been both a sea boat and a vessel for inland waters. The construction and design of the currach is unique to the west coasts of Ireland and Scotland, with variations in size and shape by region.
In this painting they lie waiting like giant shiny black beetles !
