Description
Pencil sketch of River Barrow and weir below Graignamanagh Bridge in Co Kilkenny, Ireland Between the arches can be seen a glimpse of houses on the quay .I lived in one of these for three years and sketched this piece during that time -it was a wonderful place to live. The historic 6th century Duiske Abbey a fully restored medieval early Cistercian Abbey was just up the strret in the town.
An elegantly-composed bridge built to designs prepared by George Smith 1763-7 forming an attractive landmark at a crossing over the River Barrow in the centre of Graiguenamanagh, the bridge represents one of a number of bridges in County Kilkenny rebuilt by Smith
The bridge remains of additional importance in the locality for the associations with the 1798 Rebellion when some of the arches were destroyed by a British Crown Force-initiated explosion to prevent access to County Kilkenny from County Carlow on the opposite side of the river.
