Description
Watercolour painting of Venice. An atmospheric piece inspired by evening light on the water in Venice, Italy. A gondola make its way home through the harbour of liquid gold, a view of the famous and beautiful baroque church "Santa Maria della Salute" in the distance.
Venice which I have had the pleasure of visiting on two occasions is arguably the most beautiful of all European cities.
Santa Maria della Salute is a Baroque church at the entrance to the Grand Canal. The church was built at the time of plague in the city which raged from 1630. Before that period the city had a population of about 46,000 inhabitants, tragically one third of the population perished from the plague. As a votive offering for the city's deliverance from the pestilence, the Republic of Venice vowed to build and dedicate a church to Our Lady of Health (or of Deliverance, Italian: Salute).
